Just as I start to feel that perhaps I am being too tough on Senator Byrd, I read this. Turns out that when it suits his interests Senator Byrd doesn't believe that Senate rules should bind future Senate sessions.

So Senator Byrd's position on the filibuster has now been completely exposed as partisan politics. Which is too bad. Even though I disagreed with him on the filibuster issue - and I am against the filibuster regardless of what its intended use is to be (or which party would be using it) - I thought there was a strong, principled position for the filibuster. Perhaps the Democrats have another member of the Senate who actually has the integrity on this issue to make that stand - given Byrd's history he has to be the absolutely worst person to argue for the filibuster. It is amazing the democratic leadership allowed (or didn't prevent) a former KKK member who has used the filibuster to block the civil rights act from speaking out on this issue. The republicans couldn't have picked a better spokesperson for the democrats.
