From Daily Kos. The forty hour work week for overtime calculation will be replaced with an 80 hour two week period. Thus, in theory (I haven't read the amendment so there could be some restrictions) employers could work one employee 79 hours in one week, and only 1 hour the next, and not have to pay any overtime to that individual.

This is just a horrible idea, and I hope the Daily Kos folks get the word out about this. I personally, in general, like Santorum. I think he and Senator Biden engaged in a very excellent debate on social security on last week's Meet the Press. But this particular provision of Santorum's amendment to the minimum wage bill is just a really bad idea.

As far as whether Senator Kennedy's $7.25 minimum wage level or Santorum's $6.25 is better, I think that depends on whether raising to $7.25 would cause an outflow of jobs to other countries. Given that it probably effects primarily service industry jobs, it may not - in which case I would favor the higher minimum wage.
